The H. P. Lovecraft Memorial Plaque

In 1990, I was running a fan group called M.A.C.A.B.R.E. (Mankind Against Cthulhu And Baneful Related Entities - yes, I'm very sorry for my sins...) I published a fanzine for it with incredible irregularity, and I had a lot of fun doing so. As a result of this activity, though, I ended up in touch with a group called "The Friends of H. P. Lovecraft". They were lobbying to get a memorial plaque set up in Providence for HPL, because, despite increasing levels of respect for him, virtually nothing in Providence remained to state that he ever existed.

I donated money to this most worthy cause and encouraged my fellow M.A.C.A.B.R.E. members to do the same. Since I was unable to get to Providence on August 20, 1990, I organized a 100th birthday party for HPL at the Chili's in Harvard Square isntead. But the plaque was dedicated, and it stands on the same block as the John Hay Library, where most of HPL's surviving manuscripts are stored.

No Lovecraftian Tour of Providence is complete without a stop by this lovely plaque.
