H.P. Lovecraft's Grave and the Phillips Family Plot
at Swan Point Cemetery

HPL's final resting place is in Swan Point Cemetery off of Blackstone Boulevard. It is incorporated as part of the Phillips Family's Plot, which is marked, as many graves in Swan Point are, by a tall marble obelisk. HPL's headstone, as well as the Phillips obelisk, are very frequently visited by HPL fans (although none came out to join my S.O. and I as we paid our respects on a very chilly day.) People often leave photographs, flowers, and other odd gifts at the site. More often then not, someone uses a marker on the Phillips obelisk to write That is not dead which can eternal lie/And with strange aeons even death may die. I didn't see any evidence of that today, thankfully (I think it's rather disrespectful), but someone had stuck a photo of HPL on the Phillips obelisk, and many flowers and gifts surrounded HPL's headstone. I laid a metallic Chinese medicine ball at the headstone, and we sraightened up some of the flowers.

HPL's Headstone

HPL's headstone. Note the many gifts left at the site by fans. If I were to turn 180 degrees, I would be looking right at the Phillips obelisk. The inscription reads,

HOWARD PHILLIPS
LOVECRAFT
AUGUST 20, 1980
MARCH 16, 1937

'I AM PROVIDENCE'

HPL's headstone, with a bit of the land around it. I have now added my Chinese medicine ball.

HPL's headstone. I pay my respects to my "God of Fiction". Off camera, my S.O. says, "HPL is rolling his eyes at you right now." He keeps me humble. :)

The Phillips Family Obelisk

The base of the Phillips obelisk, as seen when turning 180 degrees around from HPL's headstone. Note the names of HPL's parents as well as his own.

The entire Phillips obelisk, with my S.O., Stevie, standing next to it for size comparison (he's 6' 2".)

The Phillips obelisk base, as viewed from the front. Note the name of Whipple V. Phillips, the grandfather who's death began the fall of HPL's fortunes. HPL's headstone is immediately behind the obelisk in this view.

The Phillips obelisk base, from the side. Note the name of Annie E. P. Gamwell, HPL's aunt, whom he lived with from 1933 til his death in 1937. HPL's headstone would be to the right in this view.
