HPL and his mother, Sarah Susan Phillips Lovecraft, moved into this building following his grandfather's death in 1904. In a 1934 letter to J. Vernon Shea, he described his dislike of the place he had lived. "For the first time I knew what a congested, servantless house -- with another family in the same house -- was...I felt that I had lost my entire adjustment to the cosmos..." He moved out in 1924, when he married Sonia Haft Greene and moved into her Brooklyn, NY apartment.
